Steele had previously worked with Pnau on "With You Forever," a track from the band's self-titled third album, and the pair enjoyed collaborating so much that they started their own project, drawing inspiration from the likes of Phoenix and Daft Punk. Little known Spielberg film, and Christian Bale's first starring role.

While I don't think this was a huge box office hit back in , the script is beautifully written and portrayed by an ensemble cast of some of the yet to be acknowledged masters of their generation, John Malkovich and Christian Bale to name just two. Set in a 's Japanese internment camp in Shanghai, the cinematography is among Spielberg's best, and the special effects, stunt flying in particular , are nothing short of spectacular.

A must see if you haven't seen it already. Once you have you'll be sure to return to it now and again as I do I watched Empire of the Sun some thirty years ago and remember being amazed by an epic narrative set against a panorama of WWII era China.

I remembered the story arc and a few scenes but not much else so I thought it could be fun to watch it as an adult. The cultural stereotyping is a reminder that it was made in the s. However, the acting, particularly that of Christian Bale, is superb and carries what could have been a B-movie into a genuine classic. It is essentially a tale of growing-up; albeit under the dramatic circumstances of an internment camp. That, along with the previously mentioned blunt use of literary techniques, make it more for young teens than adults.

But the movie can be enjoyed by all. Watch it with your tweens or young teens. They should love it. One person found this helpful. Movie is way to long, they could of made it an hour shorter and you wouldn't of missed anything. Half way through the movie we were ready for it to be over. Also spent to much time on several different scenes, like when the boy is trying to revive his Japanese friend.

It didn't make any sense, he seemed to think he could bring people back from the dead. The director of the movie did a poor job of directing many scenes. Even the ending was lame, the boy finds his parents but instead of showing happiness, they just linger a long time on a faraway look in the boys eyes as he hugs his mother.

They find a Roman ampitheatre in Ghangzhou, which I had no idea ever existed, along with a statue of angels representing heaven.

Then they see an atomic flash. A Japanese pilot on his ruined Zero hands Christian Bale a mango. Michael Bien shoots the pilot and blood gets all over the mango. Christian Bale gets angry and decks Michael Bien. American G. The atomic flash looks supernatural. This movie was out for 3 years when it came out - I wish I had scene it back then. Let me put it this way. I am the scientist who in came up with the "Jurassic Park" recipe, in New Zealand. It is not. This is. It even includes some of his best use of music.

At the time this film emerged, no one seemed to care very much. But anyone who was really paying attention would have seen immediately that his "Schindler's List" film was going to be one of those rare films that was "better than the book. One of Spielberg's least-known movies is arguably his masterpiece, the most visually poetic film since Lawrence of Arabia, and possibly ever. It contains literally stunning images and sequences, not for their scenic beauty but for their emotional impact and Spielberg's genius at composition and at telling stories with pictures.

Based on the autobiographical novel by J. Spielberg at the peak of his talent devises images and sequences unlike anything else in the movies.

Of these there are many, but four stand out as most memorable: One is a caravan of limousines carrying British families across the poverty-stricken city on the way to a costume party.

Another, which follows shortly thereafter, involves the son, Jim future Oscar-winner Christian Bale, in a terrific debut role - he's onscreen nearly the entire time , flying a glider across a field. In yet another, Jim, who is fascinated with aircraft, spots a Japanese Zero on the ground and approaches it. A mechanic is welding part of the fighter and the sparks create the effect of a shower of stars.

As Jim reaches the Zero and touches it almost lovingly, in the background two Japanese pilots stand silhouetted against the rising sun. And in the fourth - and most riveting - scene, American fighters attack the Japanese air base where Jim and many other British nationals are being held for the duration of the war. Done with real P Mustangs, plus some large, radio-controlled models, the sequence is likely to take your breath away; it matches the greatest moments in cinema. With John Malkovich as a scheming American living in China, Joe Pantoliano as his weasel of a sidekick, Miranda Richardson as a world-weary aristocrat, and Nigel Havers as a doctor who becomes the boy's mentor.

Beautifully shot by Alan Daviau, and featuring a magnificent score by John Williams, this movie will haunt you long after the fadeout - and maybe forever. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Remembered from my youth as a thought provoking and moving film I had searched high and low for a copy. This is a great movie of how Japan was viewed and seen by British colonists in the country at the time of WW2.

I showed my kids as a version of history. It's based on real events but the people are fictional. Plus Christian Bale is amazing in this film. He's the kid great view! Translate review to English.
