Things to Keep in Mind When Preparing for Labor and Delivery
Monday, March 19th, 2012Pregnant mothers have many things to consider when it comes to giving birth. There are details to arrange at the hospital itself, like finding the right doctor and planning the method of delivery. Of course, there are also countless things that need to be organized at home, from cribs to clothing and buying diapers. Here are few things that are important to consider for the day before and day of delivery, but might not be the most common things to hear about. Read through to prepare for what to expect as a pregnant mother.
1. Be Prepared: The single most important thing a mother can do is simply to be prepared. The more a mother researches and asks questions about the various aspects of pregnancy, the more likely she is to handle any situation that arises. A great way to feel more prepared is to create a checklist that mentions a range of subjects. Once that subject has been read about and is fully understood, it can be checked off the list. An obstetrician or gynecologist is the right person to come to as the best source to answer your questions since they will know your medical history and state.
2. Circumcision: Mothers who are pregnant with a male child need to carefully consider circumcision. In decades past it has been a common procedure, but its popularity is waning with time. As with any procedure there are benefits and risks and mothers should carefully consider each before making the decision.
3. Pain Management: It should go without saying that childbirth does involve some pain. However, there are various ways of managing pain that can vary greatly from mother to mother. Research these methods so that there is confidence going into delivery. Some mothers opt for a more natural birth plan that involves massage, acupressure, breathing and mild medication, while others are more comfortable with an epidural. Taking a childbirth class or speaking to your obstetrician is a great way to learn about the pain management options offered.
4. Future Health Preparations: As a new mother it is important to learn about the testing for babies that is mandated by the state as well suggested by the hospital. Making sure your pediatrician visits your newborn and keeps you on a regular schedule of appointments after you leave the hospital. On the subject of future health, mothers should consider whether cord blood banking is something that might be a potential course of action. This is where the umbilical cord blood is collected immediately following delivery and stored. By having your baby’s cord blood stem cells banked, you a source of cord blood stem cells that can be available to your family should the need for those cord blood stem cells ever arise.
By understanding these four areas, any mother can feel prepared and confident while heading to the delivery room.
